Plays, Musicals, New Work, Educational Programming

Spooky Action Theater (SAT) takes its name from a phenomenon of quantum mechanics in which two particles, without ever touching, become entangled - so that a change in one is forever mirrored by change in the other. SAT’s mission is to recharge people’s intuitive and emotional core by linking artists and audiences in a shared act of imagination. SAT stages a wide variety of plays by diverse writers and cultures that demonstrate commonality in the human experience, while embracing challenging, risky and off-beat programming. In preparation for its 20th anniversary, the Spooky Action leadership team is transforming this small but mighty theater into a truly inclusive artistic home, attracting renowned local, national, and international artists in pursuit of resonant themes, bold artistic visions, and social impact.

Spooky Action Theater works to ensure equity, inclusion, diversity, and access in and to all our programs. In particular, we employ artists from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities; select plays that reflect and feature a variety of cultures, identities, and experiences; and work to lower barriers to audience access of all kinds, physical and economic, logistical and practical. According to self-reported survey demographics, our audiences are 52% male and 48% marginalised genders (women, nonbinary, genderfluid); 51% below the age of 50, and 49% above; 53% white and 47% BIPOC. 63% of the staff, board members and creatives employed identified as underrepresented genders (women, nonbinary, trans, genderfluid), and 75% as BIPOC. All four mainstage productions and 3 out of 4 New Works in Action readings produced since 2022 were written by playwrights of color.
